SERRURIER FAMILY

 

In the early days of the Cape of Good Hope, the relationship between the Serrurier and Berrangé Families was close.

 

Serrurier (alternative spellings “Serurier” “Serringe”) means locksmith. First mention of the name appears in 1326, to quote : “ Gillot le Sierurier pour sierures”.

In 20 January 1781, Jan Jacob Serrurier (“Magister”) who, in 1779, arrived from Holland in the Cape aboard the “Mars” applied for repatriation. This he did again on 7 February 1786, requesting that his wife and daughter accompany him and that he been allowed to take 20,000 rixdollars with him. In 1784, he, together with Christoffel Brandt and Jan Hendrick Eckard had purchased three houses and erven in Table Valley adjoining the Old Hospital.

Johann (Jan) Serrurier hailed from Hanau near Frankfort-en-Main. He bought “Alphen” in 1758, requesting and obtaining an extra 3 morgen of adjoining land in 1764 and selling it in 1765. He bought “Groot Constantia” in 1778 from Jacobus van der Spuy for 53,000 gulden and sold it “in fairly poor condition” 7 months later to Hendrik Cloete owner of Nooitgedacht, Stellenbosch for 60,000 gulden.

He was granted permission to manumit a slave, named January, in 1760 on payment of security to the Burgerraad.

In 1768, he was sold two houses and erven (in Block 10, Nos.1&2) from which to conduct a wine business.

Together with 7 others, he erected a blanket factory following an altercation with the then “fiskaal”, Jan Boers.

He was granted discharge as Captain of the 1st Company of Burgers in 1772 following a fractured right arm (with some resultant dysfunction) and on the grounds of gout and “progressing years”. He became an influential member of die Burgerraad, being appointed in Boer’s stead by the Prince of Orange in 1784.

1.1.5 Jan Jacob Serrurier ~ 25 February 1759 d Cape Town, 25(24) May 1785, studied in Leiden, returning to Cape Town in 1779 as bookkeeper to the Council of Justice of the V.O.C. administration at the Cape. At 26 years, in July 1784, he was promoted Independent Fiscal by the Here Seventeen. He was an unpopular official being naturally assertive, fiery and rather impulsive; and was subject frequently to disciplinary action. He remained unmarried, living at 1 Wale Street and died young on 25 May 1785.

1.2 Johannes Petrus Serrurier hailed from Amsterdam. He enrolled for theological training at Leiden University in 1753; and was ordained in 1759. He was appointed whilst in Amsterdam as pastor to the Dutch Reformed Church, Cape Town, and assumed duty in 1760. The family lived at 26 Longmarket Street and (anecdotally) at the corner of Venus (later Queen Victoria) and Wales Streets. He remained at the Groote Kerk for 44 years, and was revered for his powerful preaching skills. Duties of historical note include : burying Governor Tulbagh in 1771; conducting the inaugural service of an enlarged Groote Kerk and preaching the first sermon from the magnificent pulpit built by the cabinet-maker Graaf between August 1788 and December 1789 to a design by Anton Anreith (later this pulpit was to stand protected but in situ whilst the church was demolished and a new built between 1835 and 1841); the dedication service of the Dutch Reformed Strooidakkerk, Paarl in 28 April 1805, and the pulpit in the Sendinggestig, Long St., CT. He retired in 1804, living an active further 15 years. The estate was valued initially at a substantial 293,600.18 rixdollars to which a further 439.9 and 7656.28 rixdollars were added later

Of interest is the £878/0/1 paid out in December 1844 to “Den Mindeyargen Heer Jan Frederik Serrurier JPz” by the “Zuid Afrikaansche Maatschappy van Administratie en Boedelberedding” from the estate of Jan Petrus Snr., that is 25 years after his death. [MOOC 13/1/121 No.78]

1.2.5 Jan Frederick Snr bought 23 acres of what was later to be called “Fresnaye” from the estate of Henry Alexander in 1818.

 

He is listed as livuing at 12 Wale Street and dying in Newstreet, Cape Town, a “Gentleman” on the Death Notice [MOOC 6/9/51  No.287] which is signed “R.S.Serrurier Geb. van der Huysen” and again in untutored script “Wed.J.Fr,Serrurier Geb. van der heyden”.

 

The only relatives living at the time of his death were Jan Frederick S., Cornelia Eliana S., Magdalena Elisabeth S., Louis S., Johannes Petrus S., Jan S. His estate amounted to £3961/1/3. Will dated 6 June 1850  [MOOC 7/1/202]  No.49 is signed by Jan Fredrik JPz and Regina Sophia Rolina van der Heiden

Was confirmed insolvent by J H Bowles (Registrar of the Supreme Court) and E A Buyskes (Trustee) on 31 August 1837 for liabilities exceeding assets to the sum of £582/11/8¼. This was after his father had stood and paid surety for considerable amounts of money in the process. At that stage he owned Bellevue Farm, Green Point (sold by public auction on 26 September 1837), 2 houses and  a store in Wale Street. [MOIB 2/480 80 & 273F].

Johannes Christoffel Berrangé (“Den Welkerwaarde Heer”) died leaving an estate of 45961.10 Rixdollars (or £3447/1/9¾) to his three daughters by his first marriage to Hester Alida Elizabeth van Bockum. They were : Elizabeth Hester Berrangé married to Jan Serrurier; Catharina Gerharda Berrangé; and Antonia Maria Berrangé married to Jan Hendrik Hofmeyer Jnr.

The following note appears in the Liquidation and Distribution Account : “the slavechild Christiaan van die Kaap belonging to the Estate, aged ten years, having been found to be infected with a Leprosy, has been sent by order of the Burgher Senate to the Institute called Hemel en Aarde situate(sic) in the district of Caledon ……………………… shall be provided with the necessary clothing at the Expense of the joint estate ………… “.

Though only nine children are referred to in most texts, all the 15 children listed above appear in the baptismal records of the Groote Kerk as being the off-spring of Daniel Frederik Berrangé and his wife Magdalena Elisabeth Serrurier. In the case of two children (*), the name Berrangé was included in the Baptismal Register as though a First/Christian name.

[MOOC 13/1/121  No.77,  MOOC 13/1/217  No.61,  MOOC 13/1/317  No.72]  refer to the “Estate of the late Mr. Louis Serrurier Jan Peter Son “who departed this Life on December 1859 (sic)……… Drawn up by the South African Association for the Administration and Settlement of Estates and Hendrik Pieter Serrurier JP Son in their capacities as Executors…………”. The document No. 61 is written (and in part) both English and  Dutch. It makes mention of sums of bequests from J.P.Serrurier (“den WelEerwarden Heere”) to three direct relatives MGM (neé S : 1.2.13.1), HPS (1.2.13.3) and JFS (1.2.13.4) “provided that the Wid. C van Reenen should enjoy the interest during her lifetime”, one third each of £1943/16/1, £878/0/1 and £252/13/8.

1.2.13 Johannes Petrus Jnr was first a Clerk at the Court of Appeals (“Eerste Klerk te Secretarÿe van het Hoog Achtbaare Hof van Appel”), resident at 2 Looyersplein and later 14 Grave Street; and then appointed a magistrate in Simonstown in 1828. Death Notice signed “M.J.Serrurier”. He died leaving a substantial estate, the sums quoted being £183/11/3, £1553/12/2 and  £14225/1/7 in documents

[MOOC 13/1/108  Nos24 & 25  MOOC 13/1/113  No.38 MOOC 13/1/122  No.33.] Prior to his death, he had been hospitalised in New Somerset Hospital between October 1842-May 1843, and again in June 1843,(speculatively) for tuberculosis.

 

1.2.13.1 Margaretha Jacoba Serrurier b 6 July 1820 ~ 9(16) July 1820 d by July 1877 m Dirk Gysbel Muller, 20 June 1844

 

 

1.2.13.1 Margaretha Jacoba Serrurier (widow of Dirk Gysbel Muller) is said in the Liquidation and Distribution Account  [MOOC13/1/346  No.7] to have died on 12 March 1876. This is unlikely (see 1.2.13.4 below). She left a sizeable estate of £16068/10/2 to the following offspring : Maria Johanna Muller married to Egbert Andries Buÿskes; Magdalena Johanna Muller married to John Charles Cusling; Johan George Muller; Pieter Cornelis Muller (minor); Margaretha Jacoba Muller (minor).

1.2.13.3 Hendrik Pieter Serrurier left an estate of £1913/9/3 solely to his wife, Susanna Wilhelmina Catharina Möller.

1.2.13.4 Jan Frederick (“Minimus”) Serrurier left an estate valued at £7525/0/5 to his sister, Margaretha Jacoba Serrurier (the widow Dirk Gysbel Muller), who died a month later.

 

1.2.13.4 Jan Frederick Serrurier “Minimus” (author’s addition)(sic. Hendrik) [MOOC 6/9/31 No.6419 MOOC 13/1/355  No.17]  died at the home of N Nelson in Hanover St., aged 50 years and unmarried. He left various properties about Cape Town, including a sizable part of Sea Point Farm or “Le Sueur’s Bush” (later known as Fresnaye). Together with the death notice is a letter dated 2 June 1877 from one “Wid. D.G.Muller” (that is his elder sister Margaretha Jacoba Serrurier) which states “as sole heiress of Mr.Serrurier, I request……” that she be made executrix of the estate. Value £7525/0/5. By the time the L & D Account for £362/14/10 was presented on July 1877, “Wid. D.G.Muller” was also dead and the monies passed into her estate. [MOOC13/1/356  Nos.20 & 21]

 

1.2.13.5 Louis Serrurier b 1833 d 19 December 1859. Unmarried. No offspring.

 

Louis Serrurier’s estate was appraised 2 days after his death. It included various items of furniture and clothes, and included “1 flute box and a flute” and a house bond and cash to the value of £1856/7/4 [MOOC 6/9/88  No.6552 signed “H.P.Serrurier”]  [MOOC 7/1/246  No.211.]

Witnesses to the baptism of Hester Alida Eli(s)zabeth Johanna Serrurier were Den Welkeerwaarde Heer Jan Christoffel Berrangé  and Catharina Gerharda Berrangé. HAEJS was to remain unmarried. MOOC 6/3 pg. 88/89 gives death as 1 Jan 1822 aged 1 yr 8 mnths 18 dys.

1.2.14.3 Jan Christoffel Berrangé Serrurier b 1833 d 13 September 1894 was a Notary Public and Attorney. As Registrar of the Supreme Court and thus responsible for signing the final Declarations of Insolvency in the case of Charles George Serrurier.

 

 

Susanna Margaretha de Smidt and 1.2.14.3 Jan Christoffel Berrangé Serrurier were “legally divorced” circa. 1859, whereafter  Susanna Margaretha resumed her maiden name,  proudly being known as “Miss de Smidt” until her death in 1913. Her siblings were a brothers, John and Henry de Smidt C.M.G., sisters Maria Watermeyer of Eastbourne, England and Catharina Hendricka de Smidt of Rondebosch (d. 20 July 1912). She died in “Ophir Lodge”, Banksia Rd, Rosebank, the home of her niece who was married to one “Cecil Corey, Commission Merchant and General Merchant”, and the executor of her estate. She left an estate of £1435/17/5 to a long list of nephews, nieces and her surviving siblings  [MOOC13/1/2097  No.240    MOOC13/1/2135  No.198.]

Abraham de Smidt (AdS) was one time owner of Groote Schuur, an artist of note and later Surveyor-General of the Cape Colony. One daughter married the prominent attorney J H Redelinghuys who, in 1862 took over AdS’s home, “Sea Point House” renaming it “Weltevreden”. AdS produced 3 daughters, Dora, Susanna and Johanna. Renowned for their culture and good taste, “Weltevreden” remained the home of the 3 sisters and a centre of Cape society until 1931 when the last sister died. The house was raised to the ground and a cinema built in its stead.

 

In 1875 the De Smidt’s were seasonal tenants of a certain L A Serrurier of “Wave Crest”, Sea Point. In those days, it was the custom for the wealthy to move (literally lock, stock ’n’ barrel) to the Sea Point coast - “wij gaan nu achter toe” - in the hot summer months. Here they either already owned bijou residences which stood closed up for most of the year, or they rented accommodation from permanent residents. As an extended family, the Serruriers had substantial property interests in and about the Green Point, Sea Point and Fresnaye area.

Cornelia Gerhardina Smuts (do.Johannes Smuts and Susan Margaret Ferris) died married to Johannes Jeremias Cornelis Blignaut of Church Street, Wellington. No offspring. She died leaving an estate of £3736/18/11 to her brother, Louis B Smuts of Paarl.

I have not been able to find definitive proof of the father-son relationships quoted above. However, there is strong circumstantial evidence to support my hypothesis.

 

The Death Certificate of Lodewyk (Louis) Snr states his father as being John Frederick Serrurier and mother Charlotte Serrurier.

 

The Death Certificate of Frederick Serrurier states his father as being Jan Frederick and mother Deah Fredricka Mathews.

 

Estate papers of Jan(John) Frederik state that the only off-spring living at the time of his death were his siblings : Jan Frederick S., Cornelia Eliana S., Magdalena Elisabeth S., Johannes Petrus S., Jan S and a Louis S, ~ surely Lodewyk S Snr.

 

Oral history has it that there were at least 3 brothers and a sister, thus Ludewyk (Louis) Snr b 1815, Samuel (“Alexander”)b 1818, Johannes Petrus (“John Peter”) b 1823. The relationships are borne out in the Liquidation and Distribution Accounts of the Estate of Ludewyk Snr (bequest to Henry Lawrence, “son of Samuel”) and of Johannes Petrus (“John Peter”), where the spouse of  James Alexander Yule Serrurier is stated as being his closest relative. The original will has yet to be found.

 

The oral history relating to the sister is as follows: Unknown Female ~ said to have been an extremely attractive woman. Married beneath her social standing. He, a basket-maker, had his little factory in the basement of the St. Stephen’s Church, the “Old Theatre” or “komediehuis” in Riebeeck Square, Cape Town. Later, she went on to live with Judge Denys of the OVS “after whom Deneysville is named” (sic). She produced 2 daughters : a daughter who married a “tobacco man”; and another daughter who married a tug-master known as “Captain”. The latter couple produced a daughter who reputedly married into wealth.

 

An extraordinary feature of researching this family is the little evidence for marriages having been solemnised in church. Certainly, only 7 have been found in the registers of the Dutch Reformed Church, Caper Town.

Lodewyk Serrurier Snr was a well-known, successful Cape Town carriage-builder and wagon-maker. He made a fortune at the time of the Great Trek. His extensive business premises stood on the site of the current Supreme Court, 43-47 Keeromstraat, Cape Town. He left his business to his son, Charles George. Known for his parsimonious ways, he gave his nephew, James Alexander Yule enough money for him to buy a suit to wear to “Charlie’s” funeral.  On one occasion was witnessed by James Alexander Yule as having dropped his wallet in the street outside Standard Bank. On having it returned to him by JAYS, the same was rewarded with “a tanner” (six-pence).

 

His estate documents are numerous (published over a period of 12 years), lengthy and of considerable interest. However, I have been unable to trace his Will and Testament.

 

The curators and executors were to be Lodewyk Jnr, son (who died 19 April 1898) and Lodewyk Charles, grandson (who was “absent from the colony”). Charles George and Daniel K Berrangé substituted.

 

The First Liquidation and Distribution Account certified by Bertha Ann Serrurier attaches to the estate a worth of £103,127/0/1, approximately 15% of which is invested in substantial property interests, the remainder in bonds, debentures, personal loans, stocks and shares. 

 

Amongst the numerous bequests, the major ones were to:

Bertha Anne Serrurier (neé Merrit), money (£2000) and properties

Lodewyk Charles Serrurier (50% after other disbursements : £41434/18/4) and properties 

Charles George Maximillian Serrurier (1/6th : £6905/16/5) and properties

Charles George , Daniel K Berrangé were appointed curator (together with the Orphan Chamber) of the bequest to the minor grandchildren. The grandchildren are listed as : (majors) Lodewyk Charles, Charles Lodewyk Maximilian (minors) Bertha Henrietta, Frederick Oscar Henry, Louise Eleanor, Laura Pauline, Harriett Maria.

 

Organisations that benefited included the D R Church, Adderley Street, the Wesleyan Church, Green Market Square, The Men’s Home for the Aged and Indigent, and The Peoples Dispensary.

 

Mrs Eleanor Elizabeth van Niekerk’s capital amount of £3000 was distributed in July 1903 following her death. [MOOC 13/1/1188  No.172]

 

J C Berrangé and Son of Burg Street were the “Attornies, Notaries and Conveyancers”.

Charles George Serrurier, in business with James Tennant (Tennant & Serrurier), had his property (a subdivision of “Zorgvliet Farm”, Rosebank), attached 16 May 1884. Hugely complicated (and seemingly fraudulent) transactions had preceded this, involving the taking of a bond on the property with one Dirk Gysberk Eksteen, which, days after signing, was ceded to “sponsors” The South African Loan Mortgage & Mercentile Agency Ltd and Willem August Lippert respectively. Neither appear to have been serviced and Lippert called in the loan . The outstanding debt was appraised as £111/8/6 on an estate of £1673/18/6. He was finally declared  insolvent on 15 December 1887, the order being signed by J C B Serrurier, Registrar of the Supreme Court. [MOIB 2/2006 816]

 

Charles George Serrurier was wealthy having inherited his father’s wagon-maker’s business and (indirectly) part of his fortune. Said to have “never worked a day in his life”, he is reputed to have been very generous and was known “From The Cape to the Zambezi” for his friendliness and open-handedness.

L.C.Serrurier was a well-known counsellor in the Cape Town City Council for 25 years. Nick-named “The Black Prince” within the family, this was a tribute to his swarthy good looks.  He married to an English woman from Staffordshire, nicknamed “The Duchess of Fresnaye”, well-known for her prowess at keeping an orderly house.

He was a manager of Barclays Bank D.C.O. for 16 years and a Director of several companies of note.

Samuel Serrurier (“Alexander”) was sexton to the “Scotch Church” (St.Andrew’s Church, Cape Town) in 1867 and conducted business from 1 Berning’s Buildings near Somerset Road. He was a well-known coffin-maker and undertaker. He died impoverished, owed a good deal of money on plots he had purchased on behalf of clients in Woltemade Cemetery, Maitland and who demised without settling their debts. His death notice was lodged by Henry Lawrence Serrurier (Harry Laurence ~ “Harvey”) on 16 March 1881.

Henry Lawrence (Laurence) Serrurier and his wife Emily Caroline lived at 3 Hem(m)ing St., Kimberley when they died. However, they left behind them Lot 2 Block 51 in Fraserburg as part of their meagre estates. This had a book value of £800 having been  bonded to a solicitor in Fraserburg, one Daniel Mills Dyason {DMD}, for two amounts : £400 and £375 respectively. He, in turn, had ceded the bonds to the Standard Bank as security against an overdraft. By 1928, Fraserburg had been subjected to several years of drought, with a subsequent downturn in the value of properties. The Master of the Supreme Court tried to have the executor of Emily Caroline Serrurier’s estate [her long-suffering son-in-law E T C Holmes {ETCH}]  settle the estate. He declined because of the low property value. The bond holder {DMD} tried the same with the same result; and the Standard Bank was equally persistent of DMD. By December 1929, the outstanding debt on the Estate was £849/13/5, with the property having a current estimated value of £150. On 6 April 1931, DMD was sequestrated. He promptly had a heart attack and died on 25 April 1931. The property was sold by the Standard Bank at an auction on 4 January 1932 to one, Pieter Andries Stephanus le Roux for £150. The Henry Lawrence (Laurence) Serrurier and wife, Emily Caroline, estates were finalised on 25 March 1932, with death duties of £161 being waived by the state. All costs other than those of the bond had been carried by the offspring up until that time who felt a “moral responsibility to settle things”.

 

In the General Directory of South Africa (1894-1895) HLS is listed as a butcher and general dealer. There remains a Serrurier Street in Fraserburg, mute testimony to his passage.

Louis Douglas Serrurier founded the motor racing team “LDS” in South Africa in 1956. It was active 1962-1968. Cars that were favoured over that period were Alfa Romeo (1962), Climax (1965-67), Repco (1968). Various specials were built for local races.  His Mark 1 and 2 models were based on Cooper designs, whilst the Mark 3 was based on the Brabham BT11.

Serrurier, 11th on the grid in his LDS Otelle Nucci 1962 Alfa Romeo 4 (1-39.1) took  6th place completing 49 laps before retiring. 1963 Grand Prix of South Africa , 28 December - East London: 333.17 km (3.9197 km x 85 laps) 11th position Doug Serrurier  driving a LDS Otelle Nucci Alfa Romeo Mk2 #16  (LDS7 1:36.4). 1965 Grand Prix of South Africa , 1 January - East London: 333.625 km (3.925 km x 85 laps) , Doug Serrurier driving a LDS Otelle Nucci Mk2-Climax  (1:35.7) did not qualify. 1966  Grand Prix in Cape Town, he came 2nd in 3hrs driving a Lola T70.  1967 Grand Prix at Roy Hesketh, he won in 3hrs driving a Lola T70.

 

1969, Doug Serrurier retired from motor racing. Shamrock AC Cobra Replica proudly advertise Serrurier as being amongst their owners.

In the General Directory of South Africa (1894-1895), J A Y Serrurier listed as a mattress-maker working at 32 Wicht St. and living at 70 Constitution St., Cape Town. Later, he became a compositor and linotype setter for “The Cape Times”. He is said to have fought in the Kaffirr Wars. Of “Tamboerskloof / City Bowl branch” of family. Lived in Roukoop Rd, Rondebosch, where Agnes was born. Later moved to Highfield House at the top of Strand St., later to Warren St., and still later to “Kingston”, Gilmone Rd. Borrowed £200 from his Uncle Louis Snr. to buy Highfield House. On selling the house, and before going on holiday to England, he left his wife with £100 in gold sovereigns. His son, Louis, promptly took them and buried them out in the road. Fortunately, Louis was prevailed upon to disclose the hiding place.

 

The name “Yule” derives from the then Town Engineer of that name, a family friend. Grandfather of John Rolfe.

Frederick Serrurier was a shoemaker and was blind. He and Anna Serrurier (neé Jacobs) had no offspring. They adopted one, Kathleen Ramsbottom, who became known as Catherine Serrurier. They were very poor and, in May 1877,  subdivided their land in PE. in favour of the Roman Catholic Church. He and she died at 4 Petersen Lane, Port Elizabeth. His estate totalled £200.

 

His Death Notice gives his father as Jan Frederick Serrurier and mother as Deah Fredericka Mathews.

Magdalena Elisabeth Serrurier died intestate. Application was made to have the following appointed executors: Jan Christiaan Berrangé, Louis Berrangé, Jan Fredr. Serrurier and Fredr. van Breda. The Death Notice lacks clarity if not accuracy [MOOC 6/9/44  No.9168].

 

In keeping with many documents I have seen written by JC Berrangé, the Death Notice is a slap-dash document and contributes to the obfuscation which surrounds Family names. It is written in a poor hand, paying little heed to accuracy nor convention with regards to lineage. See “The Serrurier Family Tree” for lineage.

 

DFB was the 7th child and s.o. Anthonie Berrangé and Elisabeth Fleck of Delft; and is described on his marriage certificate as “Auditeur Militair by t Garricockalhier”. He became a well-respected Cape Town attorney/advocate. He was President of the Orphan Chamber and held an Doctor of Laws (LLD) according to his Death Notice [MOOC 6/9/36  No.7927].

Jan Christoffel Berrangé & Son of Burg Street, Cape Town were well-known “Attornies, Notaries and Conveyancers”. His death notice is extremely confusing, listing grandchildren as minor offspring together with his own live children [MOOC 6/9/172  No.7626].

 

The Death Notice of Johanna Francina Pentz [MOOC 6/9/71  No.3326], written and signed by J C Berrangé (her husband) lists 9 children alive at the time (denoted thus **).

When he died, Petrus Hermanus Berrangé and Frederick Carlyon Berrangé were not mentioned on his Death Notice [MOOC 6/9/647  No.1875], and two children denote thus (#) were minors. His marriage tool place in the Lutheran Church, Strand St., Cape Town. When she died, Petrus Hermanus Berrangé was not mentioned in her Death Notice. All other children were minors on her death at “Jolander House”, Sea Point [MOOC 6/9/325  No.246]

The children denoted (^) were mentioned on his Death Notice [MOOC 6/9/282  No.1417] He was aged 75 years. His first wife is named only as Maria Elizabeth and his next as G S Callanan. The second marriage described needs further investigation though it is noted in a reputable source.

Anna Susanna Gertruida Callanan of Ceres, do. John Callanan and Gertruida Catharina Dreyer, first married Thomas James Little, who died in 1873, thereafter JC Berrangé [MOOC 6/9/364  No.1176].

Though only nine children of the original Daniel Frederik Berrangé (1.1.1.7) are referred to in most texts. All the 15 children listed above (1.1.1.7.1-1.1.1.7.15) appear in the baptismal records of the Groote Kerk as being the off-spring of Daniel Frederik Berrangé and his wife Magdalena Elisabeth Serrurier. In the case of two children (*), the name Berrangé was included in the Baptismal Register as though a First/Christian name.
